5 Most Common Body Shapes and the Perfect Dress for It

Dressing up plays a major role in how people perceive others. It is part of the first things that people notice that adds to their first impression of the person they just met. With the variety of clothes to choose from, dresses are one of the women’s favourite choices. Picking out the right cut of dresses could be difficult when they do not know what cut will suit their body type the best, so it is important to get familiar with the different body shapes that go well with different cuts of dresses.

Different Body Types and Shapes

Physical structures and weight distribution determine each woman’s body shape. Due to the levels of estrogen, a woman’s body can differ greatly from one another. One can have wider hips, and a smaller upper body and others may have narrower hips and wider upper body structure. Each body shape is unique, and different types of dresses fit each type the most.

Apple-shaped Body Type

This body shape is more commonly known as the inverted triangle body type. It means the upper body is larger, has a full midsection, and narrow hips. Sometimes defined as top-heavy, the common concern is waist definition. The perfect dress for this body type is something that would give the waist part a definition.

Tips:

  • Choose a dress that is made of soft fabric to avoid the material from creating bulges.
  • Details on the lower part of the dress are great to bring attention to the legs.
  • Stay away from too much fabric on the waist area.
  • Structured pieces are great for definition.
  • Deeper necklines are better than a completely covered top part.

Pear-shaped Body Type

This shape is characterised by having wider hips and smaller busts and shoulders. The upper body appears to be slimmer than the rest of the body. The perfect dress should draw more attention to the upper body and the waist area.

Tips:

  • Choose a dress that draws attention to the waist.
  • Structured shoulders on dresses are great as they make the upper body appear wider.
  • To draw more attention to the upper part of the body, bright coloured sleeves or top parts of the dress and darker tones on the bottom part are advised.

Hourglass Body Type

This is recognised by the upper body and lower body having equal proportions, and the midline is smaller. This body type appears when the weight is equally distributed to the body parts, and the best dress should focus on its natural shape.

Tips:

  • Choose a dress that will show off natural curves, such as fitted dresses.
  • Focus on the definition of the waist by wearing darker tones.
  • Necklines can be anything that shows the natural body silhouette.

Rectangle Body Shape

Like the shape of a rectangle, this body type can be on the taller and leaner side without the definition of the waist and the curves. This type is characterised by having the bust and hips in similar proportions with little to no waist definition.

Tips:

  • Break the rectangle by wearing a dress with different top and bottom colours.
  • Structured dresses are good to create definition.
  • Round dress necklines are better to create more curves.

It is best to know one’s body type to be able to choose the best type of dress that will suit them best.
