How To Take Inspiration From The Regency Period For Your Jewellery Collection
Spread the love

The new series of Bridgerton has sparked great interest in the Regency Period once again, with many people wanting to learn how they can take inspiration from the show for their homes, fashion and what we will be focusing on, which is the vintage jewellery! Whilst some pieces are understated, there is a lot of extravagant pieces that were worn by the very highest members of society that would be worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions, today.

Jewellery Collection

The main themes of the Regency period were fashion, parties, jewellery, romance and gossip for the upper classes, with decadent outfits for balls being a huge part of society. Therefore, the jewellery had to live up to the same decadent standards. During the time, there was a strong period of change, with industrialisation being born, leading to extreme wealth as well as extreme poverty for many. It was the extremely wealthy that fuelled the fine jewellery industry, as they could afford the fine jewels and metals.

We are going to introduce what the motifs were, the popular gemstones, metals and how you can incorporate similar pieces into your jewellery collection.

Motifs

Motifs were a huge part of jewellery in the regency period, with flowers, crescents, feathers, bows, leaves, foliage and ribbons. Any jewellery featuring a motif was extremely ornate and beautiful, often with enameling and glass overlays. These motifs were commonly seen in rings and brooches specifically, although there are also many stunning and ornate necklaces from this era too. Choosing jewellery with motifs can help you to really find something meaningful to you.

Gemstones

Although extravagant motifs were common in the Regency Period, there were more classic pieces featuring breathtaking gemstones that have remained timeless. Large bright gemstones like rubies and emeralds often featured, usually in a cluster design alongside beautiful diamonds in breathtaking designs. The craftsmanship seen in this era was impeccable, with the quality meaning that these pieces have lasted and continue to look absolutely stunning.

Metals

In the Regency Period, the jewellery featured either silver or gold, as platinum wasn’t used until around the late 19th century. Gold was more predominant, particularly in the use of Posy Rings, which are gold rings inscribed with beautiful words and poetry that were exchanged between lovers, described in two of Shakespeare’s plays in the 16th century. Either silver or gold were typical in the Regency Period, so the choice is yours!

Invest in Vintage Jewellery

So, if you want to get your hands on some Regency Period jewellery to add to your collection, you should go to a certified jeweller to make sure that it is authentic. The Regency era is particularly popular for vintage engagement rings, with the unique designs and motifs making them very distinct and extremely beautiful. As mentioned, cluster rings were very popular as engagement rings, with the design standing the test of time and still dominating today. The timeless nature of Georgian jewellery means that if you invest, it can be worn and loved by your family for decades and centuries to come.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it! Georgian jewellery is so intriguing and was a vital part of society at the time. There are so many benefits to vintage jewellery, from it being better valued for money to more unique, sustainable and exceptionally beautiful, so if you are considering adding to your jewellery collection, vintage jewellery is definitely something to consider. Speak to your jeweller about the best ways to look after your vintage jewellery, so that you can make sure that it lasts for centuries to come.
