The Best Ways to Save Your Hair From Sun, Chlorine, and Saltwater

March 22, 2020 by ★SSS★

Spread the love
We normally feel well-protected and prepared to have fun outdoors after slathering on sunscreen from the top of foreheads to the tips of toes. Many of us also forget that one key spot that we’ve forgotten about— our hair.
Most women today are into frequent haircuts, deep conditioning treatments and hair masks to keep their hair looking healthy. A lot of us don’t pay attention to this important step. Our hair may not burn in the same way as skin, but the sun’s harmful rays can definitely damage it. Not only the sun do we need to consider during the summer, but we must also look at the heat styling tools we use, chlorine, salt water and air conditioning which can make unprotected strands become vulnerable. The sun becomes greater during the summer months and days become longer. We tend to be in chlorine and saltwater more during this time so you would notice how your hair becomes drier and hair colour tends to oxidize faster than during the colder months.

How to avoid these things at all costs?

The Sun and Your Hair

It’s ridiculous how we think that our hair is not that important. We don’t usually treat our hair the same as we treat our skin or our bodies. We are always quick to slather ourselves in sunscreen when we visit the beach so we don’t end up being a red, painful mess, and yet we neglect our hair. If you don’t protect your hair and scalp from the sun, your hair goes from shiny and healthy to dry, dull, and brittle. Plus, the sun can also change your wonderfully dyed hair job. Particularly, the colour oxidizes from UV exposure, making that not so cute faded colour.

Ways to Protect Hair From the Sun:

  • Protection Spray. Aside from shopping sunscreen, grab some UV protection spray. They’re not that complicated and they help protect against the sun and some even protect against chlorine
  • Wearing a Hat. A hat can be a great help with your hair.

The Chlorine and Your Hair

Your hair can never be best friend with chlorine. Chlorine is considered to be one of the harshest chemicals your hair encounters in the summer.

Once your hair is exposed to chlorine, it will strip off your hair’s natural oils. Natural oils make your hair soft and shiny and if that will be taken away, it can cause your hair cuticles to break. Chlorine can make your scalp dry, irritated, and gain excessive dandruff. And be extra careful if you have dyed hair because chlorine quickens the facing process and strips hair colour.

Ways to Protect Hair From the Chlorine:

  • Shower First. You have to know that your hair is like a sponge. Your hair will soak up the chlorine or salt water which will leave your hair dehydrated. You may want to apply a leave-in conditioner to lock the moisture of your hair from being dried out.
  • Wear a Swim Cap. Although not everyone likes to wear a swim cap, they’re actually a great way to protect your hair. Wearing a swim cap will protect your hair from the water you are swimming in.

The Saltwater and Your Hair

Some of you may hope to get those mermaid-Esq beach waves when you leave the ocean. However, that’s not always the case. Your hair getting overexposed to salt can become damaged, frizzy, and turn into a mess.

Saltwater can easily dry out your hair and scalp, stripping all its water, leaving it rough and dehydrated. Having a lack of moisture for your hair can lead to split ends breakage and dandruff on your scalp.

  • Put Your Hair Up. If you don’t like hats, the best thing you can do is to throw your hair into a cute up-do or a bun. You can also apply argan oil or conditioner to the ends of your hair prior to putting it up or in a braid.

Apply Hair Mask or an Oil Treatment:- you need to replenish, re-hydrate, and soothe your hair and scalp. You may do a DIY hair mask and oil treatment as easy as taking your favourite carrier oil such as jojoba and leaving it in your hair for 20-30 minutes.
